Intermolecular Forces

Overview

These web pages give an overview of the nature of intermolecular forces, including the origin of these forces and the factors which influence their strength. The level of treatment is about that of a first-year university or college general chemistry course. The reader should have a general knowledge of:

  • the structure of atoms (a positively charged nucleus surrounded by negatively charged electrons),
  • the fact that opposite charges attract and like charges repel, and
  • the variations in size of atoms and electronegativity with position in the periodic table (see for example WebElements).
