Session 1
Session 2
Students interested in a research internship should contact the school directly (see the contacts page) to enquire about CHEM3998 (Special Project in Chemistry 2, 6 UoC) and CHEM3997 (Special Project in Chemistry 3, 12 UoC). Senior year laboratory classes are held in new, bright, air conditioned laboratories with views over the University Mall and the Village Green. CHEM3011 - Physical Chemistry
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S1 Elements of symmetry and group theory appropriate to molecular structure and spectroscopy. Quantum chemistry; Atomic and molecular spectroscopy - principles and applications. CHEM3021 - Organic Chemistry
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S1 Synthesis and reactions of the principal types of aromatic heterocyclic systems. Stereochemistry. Synthesis and reactions of carbocyclic systems. Application of spectroscopic methods, e.g. nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, to determination of organic structures. [course outline (PDF, 400 kB)] CHEM3031 - Inorganic Chemistry
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S1 This course covers four topics: (a) Metal complexes – fundamental theory, structure, spectroscopy and magnetism; (b) Inorganic reaction mechanisms; (c) An introduction to organometallic chemistry and catalysis; (d) Bioinorganic chemistry – an introduction to the reaction chemistry of metalloenzymes. [course outline (PDF, 400 kB)] CHEM3041 - Analytical Chemistry
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S1 This course builds on students' existing background in analytical chemistry to develop both theory and practice relating to the latest analytical techniques used in industry and research. The course covers in general, method validation and quality assurance in the analytical chemistry laboratory; and for selected major techniques; method development, theory, operation, instrumentation and applications. Analytical methods covered include; separation techniques (chromatography), mass spectrometry, hyphenated chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques, and elemental atomic spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. There is a strong emphasis on practical experience. [course outline (PDF, 400 kB)] CHEM3101 - Project Laboratory in Chemistry
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S2 Group projects in instrumental and synthetic chemistry. Students choose two 6-week projects, one in each area. The course includes familiarisation with literature and database searching, project planning and risk assessment, preparation of oral and written project reports. [course outline (PDF, 500 kB)] CHEM3201 - Topics in Contemporary Chemistry A
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S2 (contact School to confirm availability beyond 2008) An interdisciplinary course emphasising the latest advances in chemistry. A diverse range of topics will be offered each year from which students will select four. Topics will vary depending on availability and interest. Indicative Topics: supramolecular chemistry and molecular recognition; synthetic strategies in organic chemistry; molecular modelling and drug design; organometallic chemistry; biosynthesis; solid-state chemistry; polymer structure and characterisation; introduction to chemometrics. [course outline (PDF, 400 kB)] CHEM3301 - Chemistry in Biological Systems
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S2 (not offered in 2008, contact School to confirm availability beyond 2008) Aspects of bioorganic, bioinorganic and bioanalytical chemistry including : natural products chemistry; antibiotics and drugs; herbicides and pesticides; the occurrence, coordination and role of metals in biology; enzyme and immunoassays in chemical analysis; biosensors. CHEM3311 - Environmental Chemistry
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S2 (not offered in 2008, contact School to confirm availability beyond 2008) Selected topics in advanced environmental chemistry. Topics will be offered from a list including: heavy metals, detoxification mechanisms and inorganic speciation; sampling and strategies for environmental analytical chemistry; atmospheric chemistry and pollution mechanisms; case studies of organic pollutants and remediation mechanisms. The laboratory component includes environmental project work and an introduction to regulatory requirements [full details] CHEM3811 - Food Chemistry II
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S1 (not offered from 2009 onwards) Water in food. Dispersed systems; colloids and gels. Chemistry of colours and flavours in food. Food additives. Minerals. Food toxicants; pesticide residues. Theory and practice of modern methods of food analysis. Analytical principles. Official methods of analysis. Major instrumental techniques and their applications. Choice of an analytical method. CHEM3901 - Environmental Toxicology
UOC6 HPW6 WKS12 S2 Note: CHEM3901 may be taken in second or third year and is primarily designed for non-chemistry majors. Classification and properties of toxic substances. Biological properties of important classes of chemical compounds. Fate of xenobiotics in the human body, including detoxification and bioactivation.
