Undergraduate Programs in Chemistry

Science 3970 - Chemistry Major

The general rule for the major is that it consists of 42 units of credit in Chemistry courses at level II and level III, with at least 18 units of credit at level III.

Although level I courses are not formally included in the definition of the major, clearly there are courses which need to be taken at level I, in order to enter the major program in second year.

Students planning to do honours should take 24 units of chemistry at level III.

The program below therefore lists both recommended and required courses as advice to prospective chemistry majors.

Stage 1

12 UOC of level I Chemistry (fundamental or higher level)1
12 UOC of level I Mathematics (any of the listed combinations)
6 UOC of level I Physics (any of the listed options)2

Notes:
1 Where students have the necessary qualifications they are strongly encouraged to do CHEM1031 and CHEM1041 instead of CHEM1011 and CHEM1021
2 12 UOC of Physics is recommended

Stage 2

A minimum of 18 units of credit at level II Chemistry - see second year course listing for the full list of options

Stage 3

A minimum of 18 units of level III Chemistry - see third year course listing for the full list of options

plus

A further 6 units of credit in Chemistry at level II or level III.

Note: Students planning to enter the Honours program should take 24 units of chemistry at level III.
