UNSW Chemical Society

The UNSW Chemical Society is one of the oldest societies in Australia since it continued directly on from Sydney Technical College Chemical society. Regular meetings are held during the teaching year at which invited speakers give talks on a wide range of topics of general chemical interest. In addition, a number of bequests enable the Society to invite distinguished researchers from abroad to give a series of lectures and to have discussions with staff and students. At least one such series is given each year and previous lecturers have included Nobel Prize winners.

Membership is open to all staff and students in the School of Chemistry. Generously, in 2004 the School paid the membership fees of all graduate students and undergraduate chemistry majors. All members are encouraged to join the committee and help in organising the programme.

  • Monthly Lectures: The UNSWCS aims to present lectures of general chemical interest.
  • Endowed Lectures: The UNSWCS administers or helps organise a series of endowed lectureships which allow us to invite pre-eminent scientists to UNSW. Details of the endowments and previous lecturers can be found at the following links.
  • Social Activities: The UNSW Chemical Society and the Students of Chemistry Society (SOCS) are undertaking a joint venture. This involves joint social activities, details of which can be found here.
  • Minutes of the Council Meetings: Available to council members are the minutes of the previous AGM, this year's council meetings and this year's Lectureship meetings.
