Supplementary Income from Part-time
Teaching
First Year Laboratory Teaching
The School of Chemistry employs graduate research students
to assist in the delivery of laboratory classes in General Chemistry at
the First Year level. These classes are held in modern teaching laboratories
in which each demonstrator is responsible for up to 18 undergraduate students.
An experienced member of staff supervises the laboratory and supports the
demonstrators during the two- or three-hour classes.
The rate of pay for this work is currently $32.41 per
hour*. Graduate students must apply for part-time demonstrating in the First
Year Unit (1st floor Dalton Building, southern end). Enquiries can be directed
to the Director of First Year Studies.
In order to be eligible to take a part-time teaching position
it is essential that students are sufficiently proficient in English to
instruct. It is also essential to undertake the Demonstrators' Training
Program. The program is free to all graduate students and satisfactory completion
leads to a certificate. In some years the number of part-time teaching positions
is fewer than the number of applicants. It is therefore not always possible
to provide a position for all applicants. Normally applicants are offered
not more than six hours per week of part-time teaching.
Part-time Teaching at Higher Undergraduate Levels
Some of the courses taught in the School of Chemistry at
the second- and third-year levels provide part-time teaching opportunities
for graduate students with prior demonstrating experience and qualifications.
You should ask your supervisor about these opportunities. Usually students
teaching at higher levels do so in a discipline that overlaps with their
research area.
* The hourly rate for part-time demonstrating is subject to change
without notice. The current rate should be obtained directly from the First Year Unit.
