Graduate Coursework - Grad. Dip. (Res)

Program 5647 [coursework 48 UC]

Graduate Diploma in Chemistry (Research)

Description

The Graduate Diploma (Research) in Chemistry offers an advanced training program for graduates who wish to update their knowledge of research chemistry and/or satisfy requirements for admission to a research degree in chemistry. This Grad. Dip. program will normally be completed in one year on a full-time basis, or two years part-time. Students wishing to use the Graduate Diploma as a stepping-stone to a higher research degree should consult with their potential supervisor on their choice of courses.

Admission Criteria

A three or four year B.Sc. degree with a major in Chemistry or equivalent qualification. Students qualified to enrol in the Honours program would be expected to do so rather than enrol in this Grad. Dip. program.

Course Requirements

Candidates are required to complete a total of 48 units of credit (UC). One component is the 'Research Project' courses (CHEM7120 and CHEM7121) consisting of research project work totalling 24 UC (this may remain as two projects, each 12 UC, or be combined into one project comprising 24 UC). The other component consists of postgraduate level courses totalling another 24 UC. These courses must include CHEM7119 (Research Skills) and a further 18 UC of which 12 must come from Chemistry courses that are listed under the Chemical Analysis and Laboratory Management (CALM) program.

Courses

UC HPW
CHEM7119 Research Skills (Staff Contact: Dr G. Edwards)
Project planning, experimental design, hypothesis development, report writing, discussion of results, library usage, oral presentation skills. Includes a major literature review. Teaching will be by tutorials, self-paced learning and attendance at specialist workshops; students will be assessed on several literature assignments plus the literature review for a research project (normally the literature review of CHEM7120) and a seminar.
6 3
CHEM7120 Research Project (Staff Contact: Dr G. Edwards)
A research project compatible with the needs of the student will be performed under the supervision of a member of staff. The student will present a research proposal together with the following chapters of a major research thesis - Introduction, Literature Review, Experimental Procedures and Preliminary Results. This forms the first part of the project, to be completed with the Research Project course CHEM7121.
12 12
CHEM7121 Research Project (Staff Contact: Dr G. Edwards)
A research project compatible with the needs of the student will be performed under the supervision of a member of staff. The student will complete the project begun as CHEM7120 and present a major research thesis and a seminar on the work.

Timetable

Timetabling of the central Grad. Dip. courses CHEM7119, CHEM7120 and CHEM7121 will be arranged between the student and the research project supervisor. Timetable information for the Chemistry CALM courses available for this program is found here.
