Teaching and Learning in the School of Chemistry

learning in the School of Chemistry

The School of Chemistry at UNSW is one of Australia's leading centres for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in chemistry. The School offers undergraduate courses from first year to third year and honours, including an honours program for students without an intensive Chemistry background. The School teaches first year chemistry to more than 2000 students each year from many different faculties, and offers four different undergraduate programs leading to majors in chemistry. Students in Advanced Science programs and honours students from other programs do a fourth year in which a research project is a major component. Shorter research projects also feature in many courses from first year onwards. Full details of undergraduate programs, postgraduate opportunities and research projects can be found elsewhere on the School's web site.

Since the beginning of 2007 all laboratory classes in Chemistry have been held in the new Chemical Sciences building. These new laboratories meet or exceed all current safety requirements and provide a bright and pleasant working environment. All teaching laboratories are air conditioned and our first year laboratory features large audio-visual displays.

The School also offers local and overseas Chemistry graduates the opportunity to extend their knowledge and skills through research and coursework postgraduate programs. Coursework Masters programs are industry orientated and offer training in the latest chemical analysis techniques and associated management areas, while the Ph.D. by research program allows students to develop the skills needed to carry out independent research.

Research in the School covers the broad areas of molecular devices, bioactive molecules, and chemical and biological catalysis. Students studying Chemistry at UNSW learn from acknowledged leaders in chemical research.
