August 2008 NSW Activities
The Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) promotes chemistry in Australia. One of its activities is to run an Annual National Chemistry Week. It is during this week that the National Chemistry Quiz and the Creative Writing Competition are held.
Ultimo Science Festival Partners 20 -24 August 2008, Part Of National Science Week, RACI Volunteers Required For Saturday Sunday 2rd & 24th August 2008.
The NSW RACI Branch is participating in this Festival with the ABC, UTS, TAFFE and the Power House Museum as part of National Science Week. The Ultimo Science Festival is a celebration of the vibrant cultural, educational and innovative activities that happen every day from Broadway to Pyrmont, Haymarket to Glebe - and the diverse community of people (students, workers, visitors and residents) who create, learn, teach, record, broadcast and enjoy the activities of the precinct. The festival is being run by the precinct partners the ABC, TAFE, the Powerhouse Museum and UTS. Activities will be held in each of their buildings. The Ultimo Science Festival has been made possible with funding from the Australian Government Department of Education, Science and Training, the City of Sydney. Activities will explore forensic science, sustainable technologies, relations between design, fashion and science and more. "Murder on the Ultimo Express" is a forensic science competition where people can collect clues to solve a murder mystery. The festival runs from the 22nd - 26th August with school events during the day on weekdays, action-packed days during on the weekend and events each evening. The program can be found on the website: www.ultimosciencefestival.com The RACI NSW Branch will have a stand on the weekend for kids to make molecules l and also to have their picture taken with the model they have made. We need Chemist volunteers to assist and answer questions that the kids or parents may have about molecules. We will run the activities from 10am - 4pm. It is envisage running two shifts per day (9:30 - 1:00pm and 12:30 - 4pm). CRYSTAL GROWING COMPETITIONThis competition is aimed at Primary School through to Year 8 students in 3 divisions: K-3, Years 4-6 and Years 7 & 8. This year there is also an open division for students from K-10 in which entrants may grow any crystal of their choice. Crystals of Potash Alum (potassium aluminium sulfate) will be grown for five weeks and submitted to the RACI for judging by Friday 20th June 2008. Biggest will not necessarily be the best! To participate, there is a $6 entry fee per school, or $1 5 + postage if you require us to supply 500g of Alum sufficient for 3 groups of students to enter. Entrants may be by school, class, team or an individual, but all entries are to be registered by a teacher.
