Information:

The section was formed in May 1995 by Dr Robert Weatherby & Dr Tony Tyler to provide a forum for discussion on chemistry and related topics and the further the aims and ideals of the RACI.

Our activities, about 5 per year, include laboratory tours, talks by members and guests and seminars. These meeting are excellent forums for scientific exchange and for discussing chemistry, related sciences, analytical techniques, equipment and instrumentation used in laboratories. The activity normally concludes with supper.

We are also involved in Chemistry education and the section supports both the Annual Nyholm lecture and Titration competition for high school chemistry students.

We have our AGM and elections in September each year, usually at a dinner meeting.

For example, the 2007 year saw 80 attending 5 meetings (range 7-22, average 16) including an essential oil chemistry night at ATTORI (Australian Tea Tree Oil Research Institute) located at Southern Cross University, "Drug Testing for the Olympics" talk by Dr Ray Kazlauskas from AGAL (Australian Government Analytical Laboratories) and a four speaker and lab visit theme night on "The Analysis And Management Of Acid Sulphate Soils". The AGM elections and Dinner was held at the Bellowing Bull Restaurant in Wollongbar. Some 280 High School students attended the Nyholm Lecture and 13 teams from 6 schools competed in the RACI titration competition.

Our membership area covers Tweed Heads to Coffs Harbour and west past Casino, although most members are from the Casino to Ballina section. Our members are from university, government, including chemistry teachers, and private industry and includes university students.

There is no joining fee. An annual Section membership fee of $10 is levied on all non-RACI members.

For further information on activities or to join either the Northern Rivers section or to become a full member of the RACI please contact a member of the section executive.
